Markakis returns to O's lineup; Pearce still out (Yahoo Sports)

Baltimore right fielder Nick Markakis rejoined the Orioles' starting lineup Monday, six days after his right shoulder was bruised when hit by a pitch from Aaron Loup during the AL East-clinching win over Toronto. Markakis had missed four consecutive games. Orioles manager Buck Showalter had prepared an alternate lineup with Markakis at designated hitter, just in case he wasn't able to play the field. First baseman Steve Pearce was sidelined for the third straight game because of a sore right wrist, and he had a cortisone injection.

Yankees' Teixeira gets 3rd injection in wrist (Yahoo Sports)

Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira had a third cortisone shot in his surgically repaired right wrist, and left-hander CC Sabathia played catch at the ballpark for the first time since season-ending knee surgery July 23. Right-hander Masahiro Tanaka said he felt normal soreness Monday, a day after his first start since July 8. Projecting the final week of the season, the Yankees' original rotation will combine to start only 80 of 162 games: Sabathia (eight), Hiroki Kuroda (32), Nova (four), Tanaka (21) and Michael Pineda (15).

More than three weeks later, the Indians got three outs and finally finished off the Royals. Cleveland moved within 2 1/2 games of Kansas City in the AL wild-card chase on Monday after Scott Atchison struggled but got finished the long-delayed 10th to complete the Indians' 4-3 win in a game suspended on Aug. 31 in Kansas City. Atchison gave up a two-out RBI single to Nori Aoki in the bottom of the 10th - Kansas City was the home team on the road - before getting Omar Infante to pop out for his second save, stranding the tying run at second. After waiting 23 days, the Indians needed nine minutes to close the gap on the Royals.

Joe Girardi already is thinking about how to handle Derek Jeter's home finale Thursday. Last year, the manager sent Jeter and Andy Pettitte to the mound with two outs in the ninth inning of New York's last game at Yankee Stadium to remove Mariano Rivera. New York had been eliminated from postseason contention the previous night. Now, the Yankees began a series with Baltimore on Monday trailing by 4 1/2 games for the AL's second wild card with seven games left.

Braves fire GM Frank Wren after missing playoffs (Yahoo Sports)

For nearly a quarter-century, the Atlanta Braves have been all about stability. In their first major off-the-field firing since 1990, the Braves dismissed general manager Frank Wren less than 24 hours after being eliminated from the NL playoff race. Former Cleveland and Texas general manager John Hart will serve as Wren's interim replacement. ''It was time,'' team President John Schuerholz said.
