David-beckham---what-s-it-all-about-
By Adrian Kinley
When you watch David Beckham with a ball you watch someone at the very pinnacle of their profession. The master craftsman, perhaps even a great artist! Europe is in mourning as he leaves for America and yet many in his new homeland aren't sure what it's all about.

As continues to grow in America the MLS have taken steps to give it a major boost with the introduction of Beckham. Even arm chair sports fans who do not follow are taking an interest and wondering what makes him special.

You need to understand David Beckham the player to understand the phenomena that surrounds him. The reason he was loved by Manchester United fans, then England fans followed by Real Madrid fans had nothing to do with his skills, his hair, his wife etc.

David Beckham has won the hearts of the teams fans he has played for because of his determination, belief in himself and most of all, because he simply never ever quits. When others around him are hanging their heads and giving up a lost cause, Beckham is running like his life depends on it. He'll chase that ball right up until the referee ends the game and he'll believe the game can still be salvaged up to the very end. It is this playing "with his heart on his sleeve" mentality that will win over the American sports fans.

Of course, it helps that he has developed into one of the greatest passers the game has ever seen and his free kicks aren't bad either. The high level of skill was achieved through sheer bloody mindedness and years of endless practice. You see, our David was never a natural player like say a Maradonna or a Pele for instance. David Beckham started life as a young teenage winger at Manchester United with a problem - he couldn't get past a defender!

It became clear to Beckham that if he were to make the grade and catch the eye of the coach, Sir Alex Ferguson, he had to do something. He started staying behind after official practice had ended and would spend hours practising his crosses until he could play them with pinpoint accuracy. He also learnt the art of making the ball bend in the air and he practised this skill until their was

none better in the world. Now he didn't have to beat the defenders, now he would face the defense but instead of trying to run past them with the ball he would kick it around them and send it into the danger area landing it on the head or at the foot of a team mate.

All this practising with a moving ball meant his dead ball skills went through the roof and he soon established himself as Manchester United's and then England's free kick specialist. His peers regard him the finest free kick taker in the world.

As David Beckham sets off on a new adventure both the L.A. Galaxy and arm chair fans will soon come to understand why we loved him so much and why we miss him already.
