Darby 'tickled' With New Nascar Car
By Anthony Fontanelle
John Darby, Sprint Cup Series director, said he is pleased with the way the new car has performed this season.

"I'm tickled with it right now," Darby said. "California was one of the best California events I think we've ever had -- if you can set aside all the weather issues and things that we had -- just watching the race. Even Vegas, the improvement in the Vegas race from 2007 to 2008 was huge in my mind. Two-wide doesn't seem to be a problem, and if the opportunity is right, three-wide doesn't seem to be a problem. So it's fun to watch the cars race and be as racy as they are this early in the year, especially at tracks that we haven't been to before."

NASCAR teams spent Monday and Tuesday this week at the Phoenix International Raceway familiarizing the car on the 1-mile track. The teams used the new car on the track for both events in 2007 however; they never test cars on it.

Last season, NASCAR’s car was used primarily on road courses and short tracks. This season, the new car now has races on the 2.5-mile, high-banked tri-oval at Daytona International Speedway, the 2-mile, fairly flat Auto Club Speedway in California and the 1.5-mile, banked Las Vegas Motor Speedway, reported Sporting News.

This weekend, goes to the 1.54-mile Atlanta track. The activity is set before heading tracks where the Cup series used the new car in 2007.

"I'm

really encouraged by what we've seen so far, and every time they hit the race track, the teams continue to learn about them, and they'll just continue to make them better and better," Darby said Tuesday during a break in testing at Phoenix.

The new car boasts of impressive feats attributed to reliable race parts. Undeniably, NASCAR’s new car is much faster than vehicles equipped with performance chip.

"In today's world, a lot of research and stuff is done, and setups on the cars is developed, from computer simulation, seven-post rigs and things like that," Darby said. "Yes, we've competed here, but during a competitive event, the teams aren't allowed to use all their data acquisition and telemetry collection devices that they use during a test.”

“The teams that tested here have a good road map of the racetrack . . . and they'll be able to go home now and enter into a computer base to use for their simulations and things and apply it to more than just Phoenix," Darby concluded.
