Dallas Stars- Background
The Dallas Stars were originally added to the NHL in the 1967-68 season with the name Minnesota North Stars. In the 1978-79 season, the Minnesota franchise was merged with another Cleveland franchise (earlier California Seals). In 1993-94 season this Minnesota franchise was transferred to Dallas, and State of Texas finally got its own NHL team. They had solid start in the first season in Dallas with Mike Modano scoring 50 goals. The team finished 3rd in the Central Division.
The years 1995 and 1996 were quite disappointing for the Dallas Stars as they finish at the last place. The next season the team improved with the acquisition of Pat Verbeek and Sergei Zubov and scored 100 points for the first time in the history of the franchise.
In the 1997-98 season, the Stars acquired goalie Eddie Belfour and grabbed the President’s Trophy for the best record in the NHL.
The season 1998-99 brought the first Stanley Cup for Dallas Stars. The team performed extremely well in the playoffs and was set against Buffalo in the season finale. Brett Hull scored a disputed goal with just 5 minutes left the 3rd overtime to clinch the Cup. Joe Nieuwendyk was awarded the Conn Smythe for MVP with a 6 game winning goals in NHL.
The next season, looking to repeat their previous season champions performance, Dallas Stars remained one of the top teams. They reached the finals but were defeated by New Jersey Devils.
In 2001-02, the team moved to brand new American Airlines Center. It was the season when goaltender Eddie Belfour struggles through one of the most difficult seasons. To further aggravate the problems, the coach Ken Hitchcock was fired and replaced by Rick Wilson. The team continues to work hard but they fell short of 4 points for the final playoff spot.
In 2002-03, goalie Eddie Belfour was replaced by Marty Turco who had one of the best seasons in NHL. They tried hard to reach the finals but were defeated in Game 6. The next season was quite unforgettable for the team as the players displayed very mediocre performance. The team performed well in the last few seasons but did not manage to reach at that ultimate stage.
