Best Rookies: Verlander And Ramirez By Julie Smith The Rookie-of-the-Year prizes were awarded last Monday. Justin Verlander was chosen among all the American League players to receive this honor. Meanwhile Hanley Ramirez from the National League won a close vote and got this well deserved recognition.
Verlander finished in first place with 133 points. Runner-up Jonathan Papelbon from Boston Red Sox ended up with 63 points and Francisco Liriano from the Minnesota Twins finished in third place.
Verlander is the first starting pitcher of the American League to be rookie of the year since 1981, when New York Yankees’ Dave Righetti won the award.
Hanley Ramirez had 105 points, receiving 14 of 32 first place votes coming from the National League’s Cities. Ramirez was
the first rookie to score more than 110 runs; he scored 119 and stole 51.
Right behind Ramirez, Ryan Zimmerman from Washington Nationals ended up. Zimmerman surprised with a long-standing franchise record of 110 runs batted in. The biggest record was achieved by Coco Laboy with 83 when he was part of the Montreal Expos in 1969.
