Is Baseball Still Americas Favorite Pastime? By Roz Cooper When I was a child, was America’s favorite pastime. As kids, we would get together in an open field or someone’s backyard, pick sides (I was always the last one to be chosen) and play ball. We didn’t have real bases. We would use a piece of scrap, an old bicycle tire or the like to mark first, second and third base. Home plate was usually a bare spot on the ground. We never had an umpire so we didn’t worry about a strike zone. We went out there and had fun.
I don’t see pick-up games in my neighborhood anymore. It may be because kids have so many electronic games to play they don’t need to go out on the school lot or backyard to be entertained. Or, it may be itself! We no longer have to wait for the World Series to see how the National League stacks up against the America League. The two leagues match up against each other several times during the regular season. The players are so over conditioned they are continuously getting injured.
What happened to the cigar smoking, beer drinking players of old? Now they lift weights to develop muscles that will be strained, sprained, spasm, pulled or popped at the drop of a hat. Most of these injuries were never heard of when was America’s favorite pastime.
I started an internet site ( http://www.baseballstoreonline.com ) a few months ago, thinking people would be interested in purchasing related items. I guess I was wrong. Not only are consumers not interested in purchasing, I am having a hard time finding drop shippers to supply products if I did make a sale. What is happening to baseball?
